Welcome to Migrant Resource Centre Tasmania (MRC Tas). Our mission is to work alongside people from refugee and migrant backgrounds so individuals and communities throughout lutruwita/Tasmania thrive.

As a volunteer at MRC Tas, you will play a part in fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for members of our community, providing important services, resources and a sense of belonging. Through your commitment to volunteering, you become an integral part of our mission, contributing to a vibrant and diverse lutruwita/Tasmania where everyone is included and everyone belongs.

Whether you bring specific skills, language proficiency, or simply a warm heart and open mind, your time and effort will make a meaningful impact on the MRC Tas community. Whatever your motivation, volunteering gives you the opportunity to meet new people, learn about other cultures, build confidence, learn new skills and gain experience.

Please note: volunteering with MRC Tasmania is only available during office hours (Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm) except for driver mentors (Hobart only) who can volunteer in early morning, in the evening and on the weekend.

Simon

Simon has been volunteering with MRC Tas for about five years as a Driver Mentor and with the Humanitarian Settlement Program.

“I think the main avenue of change in terms of migrants and refugees is teaching them skills so they can transition into their new home, their new community, their new society.”

Simon says it’s the little things that make all the difference to a migrant or refugee’s life when they first arrive in Tasmania.

“It’s fantastic being a volunteer. You get great rewards, you meet very interesting people, and you see them integrate into our community and their new home.”

Five years ago, Simon went to the airport to greet an Ethiopian family who had just arrived in Tasmania. Only the eldest son spoke a little English. He helped the mother get her driver’s licence and kept in touch with the family through his volunteering at MRC Tas.

“When I last spoke to the mother, she told me her eldest son was now studying medicine at university. Fantastic.”

Meet Kirsten

Kirsten

Kirsten is one of our fabulous volunteers with the Settlement team and has always had a strong interest in social justice. Kirsten believes everyone should volunteer at some point in their lives.

“I’ve always volunteered and I want to serve my community.”

Volunteering at MRC Tas has inspired her to pursue further study and work in Community Services.

“I encourage anybody to come and check us out because there’s something for everybody at MRC Tas.”

I want to volunteer. What do I need to do?

The first step is to express your interest in volunteering. Click the link to express your interest in volunteering with Migrant Resource Centre Tasmania. This link will take you to the MRC Tas MyImpact Page Volunteer Portal. You will need to create a user account (we recommend using your email address as your username). Please keep your log in details safe to access the system again in the future. There is additional information on MRC Tas programs and volunteer roles here.

Do I need to provide any documents?

All volunteers must provide:

Don’t worry if you do not have these documents. We can talk to you about what you need to do to apply for them.

Do I need to do any training?

Child Safety training is compulsory.

We encourage volunteers to complete Cultural Awareness Training and you can do other training workshops with MRC Tas relevant to your volunteer role. Please see the Training Page for more information on our workshops. NOTE: internal MRC Tas training is free for registered volunteers.

Volunteers with Aged and Community Services may be required to complete training on the Aged Care Quality Standards.

When can I start volunteering?

You can start volunteering once you have:

  • Completed the registration process
  • Provided the necessary documentation
  • Completed the Induction
  • Completed relevant e-learning modules in MyImpact Page

How do I apply for Working with Vulnerable People Registration?

The cost of registration is updated at the beginning of each financial year. For the current rate, click here.

Available Roles

Humanitarian Settlement Program – Client Support

HSP Client Support Volunteers meet with clients to provide settlement, orientation, social and cultural support in the initial stages of the client’s settlement in Tasmania. It may be for a couple of weeks or even longer, depending on the client needs. Volunteers will work closely with the client’s case manager.
