Tasmania’s latest census indicated that the state is home to people from 177 different countries. That’s 177 nationalities bringing distinct skills, knowledge and experiences to this multicultural island. A significant portion of these are young people, aged 15 to 25, who are making their own valuable and unique contributions.
A report by the United Nations (UN), on the impact of youth migration, found that young migrants bring with them a range of skills that enhance the economic potential and social cohesion of their destination community. And Tasmania is no exception! Across the state, young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds have made, and continue to make, important contributions to their workplaces, schools and overall community. The cultural and linguistic diversity brought by young people from multicultural backgrounds is part of what makes the Tasmanian community so unique and exceptional.
Though young people from multicultural backgrounds should be supported every day (and their contributions recognised!), taking the opportunity to publicly celebrate their efforts and achievements is important.
