International Volunteer Day 2021

International Volunteer Day recognises the tireless work of volunteers around the world. Migrant Resource Centre Tasmania (MRC Tas) has an incredible group of volunteers who work across a range of programs and activities. Today is a chance to promote, celebrate and observe the efforts of these MRC Tas volunteers and the values they uphold.

Case Study: Meet Moon, MRC Tas volunteer

Moon began volunteering as part of the Career Coaching program at MRC Tas, which aims to support people from migrant and refugee backgrounds to build their confidence in job seeking. As someone who comes from a similar background as the clients she works with, volunteering with MRC Tas has rewarded Moon with more confidence and an increased capacity to participate in Tasmanian life. “[Volunteering] built up my confidence. As an immigrant, I am always afraid that my English is not good enough, but here, I get plenty of encouragement and that pushes me to get the confidence to look for a skill-related job.”

She explains that the most rewarding part of volunteering, though, is seeing the positive impact her work has on others. “I feel encouraged when the participants talk to me and they get the job.”

“Volunteering is meaningful, we can build up our confidence while supporting others, we can find a sense of achievement,” she explains.

There are a lot of different ways to volunteer at MRC Tas. Some of the assistance volunteers offer may include:

– Providing settlement and social support to people of all ages

– Supporting people with English conversation to help build confidence and independence

– Supporting employment and education pathways

– Helping people to learn about driving in Tasmania and learning how to drive

– Providing administration, project or event support

Interested in volunteering?

MRC Tas volunteers must hold a current National Police Check and Working with Vulnerable People registration. MRC Tas can assist new volunteers to obtain their checks. All volunteers are also required to provide evidence of their COVID-19 vaccination status.
