Multicultural Youth Tasmania

About MYT

Multicultural Youth Tasmania (MYT) is a branch of Migrant Resource Centre Tasmania (MRC Tas). MYT provides targeted services and projects to support young people aged up to 25 years from multicultural backgrounds to reach their full potential and thrive as active members of the Tasmanian community. One in four young people in Australia is from a migrant or refugee background. MYT believes supporting these young people is vital to the development of an equitable, just, culturally diverse and inclusive society.

What we do

MYT runs specialist programs that provide an opportunity for young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds to develop a strong sense of belonging and resilience during settlement and beyond.  MYT programs recognise that young people in this cohort face unique barriers during adolescence, but bring with them immense strength and resilience to overcome the barriers they face.

MYT’s foundations are built on the National Youth Settlement Framework (NYSF) and utilise Good Practice Capabilities to support young people to thrive as active citizens.

Sector development

Multicultural Youth Tasmania (MYT) works in partnership with young people, government and non-government organisations to promote the needs and interests of young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds.

MYT is a partner organisation of the Multicultural Youth Advocacy Network of Australia (MYAN). MYAN works in partnership with young people, government and civil society to promote the rights and interests of young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds and ensure these are recognised in policy and practice.

MYT stakeholder network

MYT provides quarterly updates to our Tasmanian Stakeholder Network. This includes community leaders and people working within an education, health or community setting, the youth sector and sports and recreation sector.

Multicultural Youth (MY) Pathways – Launceston

The MY Pathways program, based in Launceston, works with young people from migrant, refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds who are disengaged, or at risk of disengagement, with the community, education and employment and/or are displaying anti-social behaviour. The MY Pathways program is an early intervention program that works with at risk clients through case management and group work, facilitating targeted interventions based on the participants own goals.

The program is designed to support young people from migrant backgrounds to thrive in the local community and to facilitate community safety goals around social cohesion. Participants referred into the program will undergo an intake and assessment and if suitable will receive wrap around intensive support.

Eligibility: Young people between 14-25 years from multicultural backgrounds, including young people born in Australia and whose parents arrived as migrants, refugee or asylum seekers.

Our Community MY Future – Hobart/Launceston

Our Community My Future (OCMF) supports social cohesion through positive engagement of at-risk youth from refugee, migrant, and Australian born backgrounds.

The program’s collaborative, holistic approach provides strengths-based case management and psychosocial support to young people in the community who face complex barriers to economic, civic and community participation.

The program connects young people who are at risk of disengagement and offending, with experienced youth workers and community mentors to provide wrap around support to connect and engage with the broader community and build skills for their future.

OCMF also offers young people a chance to participate in co-designing and delivering a community-based project in their local community to build skills and local networks, and support their education and employment pathways.
