During Volunteer Week we spoke to some of our volunteers to find out more about why they volunteer at MRC Tas:

Name: Nadia
Volunteer role: Project Support for the Driver Mentor Program

I volunteer because…

“I want to help newly arrived people settle within the community and help them feel welcome in Tasmania. Many of my family members are migrants and some are refugees, so I care about this issue and the value of multiculturalism, and diversity in general.”

My volunteering has…

“Given me really valuable skills and experience, as well as insight into some of the struggles faced by migrant communities and how organisations like MRC Tas support and help them.”

Volunteering is…

“Very rewarding and fulfilling. It’s also an awesome way to meet interesting people!”

Name: James
Volunteer role: Volunteer driver for Youth Football

I volunteer because…

“It helps the boys be able to play football.”

My volunteering has…

“Been great giving youth players a chance to play a sport I love.”

Volunteering is…

“A great thing to do. It’s something I hadn’t done before, but glad I do now.”

Name: Sandra
Volunteer role/s: Homework assistance, Maths Tutor, Sewing classes

volunteer because…

“I very much enjoy working with young people. I am a retired senior maths teacher and always loved teaching.”

My volunteering has…

“Given me a great deal of pleasure. It is very rewarding and very satisfying. Helping students understand their mathematics homework and teaching them basic sewing skills has been very worthwhile. The students are friendly, warm and often inspirational.”

Volunteering is…

“Something I would recommend. The staff at MRC Tas show the highest level of professionalism, dedication and commitment.”

Name: Kerry
Volunteer role/s: Various mainly youth drop-in; Tax Help; Aged Care day centres; special events like the community dinner.

I volunteer because…

“Initially it was for grief therapy, now I also volunteer to help people.”

My volunteering has…

“I like to believe my volunteering, in some small way, has helped people to develop our community and our country.”

Volunteering is…

“Rewarding and essential for some services to succeed.”

Name: Rajender
Volunteer role/s: Digi Drop-in, Housing Settlement Drop-in

I volunteer because…

“I enjoy helping others and giving back to the community.”

Volunteering is…

“Not just a one-way concept. It goes two ways. In the process of giving something to the community as a volunteer you also receive an enormous amount of happiness to your heart and in addition, you also meet people from many cultural backgrounds, build friendships, grow your network, develop new skills and also gain valuable experience.”

Name: Harry
Volunteer role/s: Admin Assistance

I volunteer because…

“I want to assist. I have great friends at MRC Tas. I also enjoy learning/training.”

My Volunteering has…

“Given me a sense of ‘belonging’ (I felt a bit ‘lost’ after retiring)”

Volunteering is…

“Enjoyable!”

Thank you to Nadia, James, Sandra, Kerry, Rajender, Harry and all our wonderful volunteers who ‘give a little, change a lot’ at MRC Tas!!
